Minimum View Guarantees in Influencer Marketing: Doing It Right (If You Must)

Performance guarantees can feel like a safety net for brands — but misused, they erode creator trust and distort campaign results. Here's when they make sense, how to structure them fairly, and what to do instead.

In the past two years, we've seen a sharp rise in brands adding "minimum view guarantees" to influencer contracts. On paper, it sounds reasonable: you're paying for reach, so why not guarantee some baseline level of it? But in practice, MVGs are one of the most misunderstood (and often misused) tactics in influencer marketing.

This guide breaks down what minimum view guarantees are, why brands reach for them, the hidden costs they create, and how to use them responsibly — or avoid them altogether.

What Are Minimum View Guarantees?

A minimum view guarantee (MVG) is a contractual clause that requires an influencer to achieve a specified number of views — usually within a defined window (e.g., 48 or 72 hours post-publish) — or face financial consequences. These typically manifest in one of two ways:

  • Repayment clauses: The creator must refund a portion of their fee if views fall below the threshold.
  • Additional content obligations: The creator is required to produce extra posts (at no charge) to make up the shortfall.

Some contracts combine both. A few even include tiered structures where the creator only receives full payment upon hitting a target — essentially making influencer fees partially performance-contingent.

📌 Quick definition: A minimum view guarantee is any contractual obligation that ties influencer compensation to a minimum reach or viewership threshold.

Why Brands Want Them

The appeal of MVGs is understandable. Influencer marketing can feel nebulous — you're writing a cheque to someone, trusting that their audience will care, and often waiting weeks to see if it worked. Guarantees feel like accountability.

There are three main reasons brands reach for them:

  1. Budget justification: Finance teams want to know what they're buying. "We're guaranteed X million views" is a clean number to put in a media plan.
  2. Risk mitigation: If a creator has had viral posts but also some underperformers, a guarantee feels like insurance.
  3. Past underperformance: Brands that have been burned by low-performing campaigns often add clauses reactively, without thinking through the consequences.

Each of these motivations is legitimate. The problem isn't wanting accountability — it's using view counts as the measure of it.

Views are a vanity metric. They measure attention, not intent. A campaign that drives 500,000 views but zero clicks is not a successful campaign.

The Real Problem with MVGs

Minimum view guarantees sound protective, but they create a set of perverse incentives that can quietly wreck your campaign.

How They Change Creator Behaviour

When a creator knows their payment depends on hitting a view threshold, they optimise for views — not conversions, not brand sentiment, not audience quality. This leads to predictable problems:

  • Clickbait-style thumbnails and titles that attract views but attract the wrong audience
  • Broader, blander content designed to appeal to everyone (and therefore converting no one)
  • Posting at algorithmically optimal times rather than when their actual audience is most active
  • In the worst cases, using tactics that inflate view counts artificially — paid traffic, view farms, or loop campaigns

⚠️ Watch out: A creator who delivers exactly 1.05× the view guarantee every time is likely optimising for the threshold, not for your campaign goals.

The Data Signals That Matter More

Our analysis of 200,000+ commercial influencer posts revealed that view count alone has surprisingly weak correlation with campaign conversions. The metrics that actually predicted performance were:

Correlation with Conversion Rate (r²)
Audience Quality Score0.82
Engagement Rate0.71
Comment Authenticity0.68
Follower Growth Rate0.54
View Count0.21

Audience Quality Score (a composite measure of follower authenticity, engagement patterns, and comment depth) had four times the predictive power of raw view count. Yet view count is the metric most brands put in contracts.

When MVGs Actually Work

To be fair: minimum view guarantees aren't always wrong. There are specific scenarios where they make sense:

  • Paid media amplification budgets: If a brand is committing significant spend to boost a creator's post, guaranteeing a minimum reach on the organic side is reasonable.
  • New-to-brand creators: When working with a creator for the first time and their historical data is limited or inconsistent, a modest MVG can set mutual expectations.
  • Time-sensitive launches: For product launches or limited-time events where reach within a specific window is genuinely critical.
  • Macro-influencer campaigns where CPM is the primary objective: If you're buying reach the way you buy display advertising, views matter more than engagement.

✅ Rule of thumb: MVGs make sense when reach is your primary campaign objective. If conversion, brand sentiment, or community building is the goal, views are the wrong lever.

How to Structure Them Fairly

If you've decided an MVG makes sense for your campaign, here's how to structure it without destroying the creator relationship:

Set thresholds based on historical data, not aspirations

The guarantee should be pegged to the creator's median performance over their last 10–20 posts — not their best post, and not your desired reach. A 15–20% buffer below median is fair. Setting the bar at their top 10% performance is not.

Use a remedy clause, not a penalty clause

Instead of clawbacks, use "make-good" provisions: if views fall below threshold, the creator produces an additional story or post. This keeps the creative relationship intact and focuses everyone on producing more good content rather than fighting over refunds.

Define the window clearly

Views at 24 hours, 48 hours, and 7 days can vary enormously — especially on YouTube where search discovery delivers long-tail views for months. Specify the exact measurement window and the platform's native view counting method.

Exclude circumstances outside creator control

Algorithm changes, platform outages, and coordinated negative sentiment campaigns can crater view counts on any post. Build in force majeure language so creators aren't penalised for factors outside their control.

🚫 Never do this: Don't set the guarantee threshold higher than the creator's verified median. Don't use view shortfall as grounds for full fee clawback. Don't apply the same threshold across platforms — TikTok and LinkedIn have completely different view norms.

Better Alternatives to MVGs

The best influencer campaigns we've seen at Dreabee don't rely on view guarantees at all. Instead, they use smarter upfront vetting to select creators likely to perform — eliminating the need for punitive contract clauses.

Here's what rigorous upfront vetting looks like:

  • Audience Quality Score: Measure the proportion of real, engaged followers vs. fake accounts, bots, and mass followers before signing any deal.
  • Engagement Rate Benchmarking: Compare the creator's ER against niche and follower-tier averages — not absolute numbers.
  • Comment Depth Analysis: Automated spam comments ("Nice post! 🔥") are a red flag. Genuine comments that reference specific content are a green flag.
  • Follower Growth Pattern: Organic, steady growth is a stronger signal than sudden spikes (which often indicate purchased followers).
  • Conversion Tracking: Use UTM links, unique discount codes, or pixel events to tie creator content directly to business outcomes — making view counts irrelevant.

The best insurance against underperformance isn't a penalty clause — it's choosing the right creator in the first place.

The Bottom Line

Minimum view guarantees are a blunt instrument in a space that rewards precision. Used thoughtlessly, they incentivise the wrong behaviours, damage creator relationships, and provide false comfort while the metrics that actually drive conversions go unmeasured.

If you're reaching for an MVG, ask yourself: am I doing this because views matter for this campaign's objective, or am I doing it because views are the number I know how to put in a contract?

In most cases, the answer is the latter. And the fix isn't a better contract clause — it's better creator selection, better measurement, and a clearer definition of what campaign success actually means for your brand.
